Anew (Piano And Modular Improvisation)

August 15, 2020

A soft piece for the hot days...

Experimenting with two interlocking phrases on this one. The sequence feels a bit more "concrete" and less open then usually but I think it's a direction I could explore more.

Patch Notes: The patch consists of two voices. The first voice is made up of a triangle wave from the EvenVCO going into the BF-22 filter into the hexmix then into the DLD and finally into clouds. The second voice is the same exept using a saw output on the second EvenVCO. The delay times are quite long almost as long as the phrases themselves leading to some nice minimal music effects. Clouds adds reverb and in the end granular processing. The filter is being modulated by two sequences coming from Pressure Points and the RYO VC Sequencer. The sequences are clocked and reset by different outputs on the 4ms Quad Clock Distributor.

Slowly (Piano and Modular Improvisation)

July 12, 2020

Practising playing and listening between the notes...

Patch Notes:
The piano comes in through the intelijel 1U in/out module. It is then patched into the 4ms Dual Looping Delay which is set to fairly long delay times: 7 beats on the left channel and 8 on the right. the output from the DLD is patched into clouds which is in granular mode with low density and high size settings. The grain direction is set to reverse and the pitch is set down one octave.

Fleeting (Piano and Modular Improvisation)

October 4, 2019

Trying one without synth voices. This piece is based on the idea of static and fleeting sounds. Changing and staying the same.

The heart of the patch is the 4ms Dual Looping Delay which loops the incoming piano and slowly fades it out at the same time. New notes are louder whilst older notes fade into the background. The output of the DLD is patched into the Make Noise Morphagene which I engage after approximately the first half of the piece. Morphagene takes the already layered and looped sound from the DLD and granulates it. All sounds begin to become very fluid and fleeting… The output of this is then patched into Mutable Instruments Clouds for Reverb and slight additional granulation and pitch shifting.

Building (Piano and Modular Improvisation)

July 26, 2019

Coming back to the modular on a really hot day. This time connecting a quite minimal piano pad from Morphagene with two sequences on my usual Even VCO and BF22 combo. On this one I just sat down and played without really preparing something. I think it’s a good way to change up your flow a bit, switching between more prepared pieces and just total train of thought improvisation.

Patch notes:

For the synth voice Yarns is generating two sequences for my two Even VCOs. Those are going through the BF-22 into the Hexmix VCA and finally for some delay into the DLD. The piano pad sound is Morphagene going into Clouds. I was thinking about doing something more sophisticated but ended up just putting a bit of reverb on the sound.

The piano is recorded with two Oktava Mk-012s.

Unsure (Piano Improvisation)

July 12, 2019

This one ended up without modular. I thought about adding some texture or accompaniment from the synthesizer, but I really liked the simple mood that the piano is generating here. Just me finding my way on the piano seeing where those first few chords take me.

So not too much to say about the patch. The piano is recorded using two Octava M12s and is running through a Thermionic Culture Vulture before being recorded. I added some light reverb in post processing.

Drop Out (Tape Loop and Modular Improvisation)

July 7, 2019

Trying my luck with tape loops! It's still all very glitchy but I kind of like the unpredictability of it. What gives me the most resistance when writing and performing electronic music is breaking out of the predictability of electronics or algorithms working perfectly as intended. The tape loop does what it wants to an extend. Also the distortion. The distortion is also very nice.

The tape section consists of two piano loops one playing forward the other backward. The output of the cassette is patched into clouds and then mixed with the rest of the patch in the 4ms DLD. The synth section is made up of two Even-VCOs cross modulated and filtered by the BD-22. The output is patched into the DLD.
