“The Lady with the Arrows” is a documentary feature directed by Heidi Specogna. It portrays the photographer and activist Claudia Andujar, from her childhood in Europe, fleeing the Holocaust, and her career and work, especially with the Yanomami in Brazil. This was a really special project for me, and I think some of my best work. This mostly stemmed from the really special collaboration between Heidi, the editor, Kaya, and me. Almost none of the music for the film was composed to picture, and I would rather compose standalone pieces that we would talk about and refine, and they would edit to and with those.
Connecting to the very human story, the score is quite acoustic, the main elements being string quartet and pianos. Around this time, I had just got my grand piano, which was not yet restored. But I was exploring this much bigger instrument at the time, and using it, most of the time prepared, quite a bit for this score. Tape and cassette loops fill another big role, especially on the piece “Paradise”.
